I was reading Noah a story tonight, a classic Golden book called Home For a Bunny... We've read it many times. In the book, a bunny asks various critters where they make their home. He asks a groundhog, and the groundhog tells him he lives in a log. When the bunny asks if he can go in his log, the groundhog says no.
Just like every other time I've read this book to Noah, I have random commentary, and this time I mentioned that that wasn't very nice of the groundhog. Noah then proceeded to say, "One time I asked the groundhog if I could go in his log, and he said NO.".... Less than two seconds after announcing this to me in his little matter-of-fact 3-yr-old voice, his whole face crumpled into genuine grief and he began sobbing. REAL TEARS. REAL GRIEF.
BECAUSE THE GROUNDHOG WOULDN'T LET HIM IN HIS LOG.
The FICTIONAL groundhog.
So I folded him into my arms, laughing silently as I comforted him... told him some cockamamie story about how if the groundhog was going to be so mean, we could go visit the frog in WorldWorld who has a much COOLER log, and Frog would let us come in and play...
Meanwhile, Noah is trying to lighten up... but keeps finding fresh waves of sobs and tears.
And then in the middle of a sob, he bawls, "I just want to go to DISNEYLAND!! Waaaaaaaaaa!!!"
Fresh tears.
Because we can't go to DISNEYLAND.
Oh man.
this kid.
I left his room just 5 minutes ago, and I guarantee he is STILL stewing on the issue of the groundhog and the lack of Disneyland.

good for you for keeping the laughter silent - not sure I could have done that...
And he's just proving that little ones really CAN'T distinguish fact from fiction yet. (Which brings me back to my 3 years ago rant about the toddler/preschooler at The Dark Knight - really?! What were *that* kid's dreams like that night?!)

Ya, and what about that parent who let her pre-schooler watch Invasion of the Body Snatchers! We KNOW what her dreams were for months after......
